How to setup Gmail on MAC, the right way

In this quick post, I’m going to show you how to setup Gmail on MAC. But before that I’d like to show you what I tried and what was the error message I encountered.

I tried to set up my business email account on Mac by adding a new account under Internet accounts. The setup did complete, however I did not see any email on the mail client. Here’s how I tried:

As you can see above, when the setup completed I was presented with the following error:

There was a problem setting up the mail account.

Mail couldn’t discover the account settings for the mail server “Unknown”.

And as you can see above, mails aren’t synchronized.

As expected, when I opened the mail client, I couldn’t find any mails.

1. Choose the option to “Add Other Account”.

When you start-off, instead of choosing the option for Gmail, scroll down and choose the option called “Add Other Account“.

2. Choose “Add a Mail account”.

3. Enter your account information.

4. Enter the Incoming Mail Server details.

Once you’re on the “Incoming Mail Server Info” window, sign-in to your Gmail account. On the top right-hand corner, access the Settings option from the drop down menu. Navigate to “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” tab.

Select the radio button to “Enable IMAP“.

Click the “Configuration instructions” link to get IMAP settings. You’ll be directed to a page that looks like the one below:

Enter these settings in the “Incoming Mail Server Info” window.

Important: User Name must be your full email address.

On the next window, set Authentication type to Password.

On the “Outgoing Mail Server Info” window, fill the settings found on the “Configuration instructions” page.

Important: User Name must be your full email address.

6. Enter the Outgoing Mail Server details.

And you’re done. As you can see below, the mails have now been synchronized.

And the mail client has started receiving mails, like seen above.

Troubleshooting

  1. If your mail client is still not receving emails, make sure you’ve enabled IMAP under Forwarding settings.
  2. Double check the Internet Account settings. Make sure you’ve entered your full email address in the “User Name” field.
  3. Make sure you’ve set “Authentication” for Outgoing Mail Server as Password.
  4. Finally try changing the port number for Outgoing Mail Server as 465.
