How to configure VPN on MAC (no client needed)

This post will walk you through the detailed steps to configure VPN on MAC. This illustration is to configure VPN on MAC without a VPN client.

I have a paid subscription to Wormhole VPN, I’ll use these settings to show you VPN configuration on MAC.

Steps to configure VPN on MAC

1. Go to System Preferences > Network

System Preferences can be found under the Apple icon on the top-left.

2. Add new VPN interface

3. Enter VPN Interface details

Interface: VPN

VPN Type: L2TP over IPSec or PPTP (check the protocol supported by your VPN provider)

Service Name: <vpn name of your choice>

Click Create

4. Enter Server Address and Account Name

Server Address: <vpn server ip-address>

Account Name: <vpn username>

Also check the box for Show VPN status in menu bar

5. Change Authentication settings

Click Authentication Settings to enter your vpn password and shared secret.

6. Change Advanced Settings

Click the Advanced tab

Check Send all traffic over VPN connection
